What are they?
AirTags and Tile are compact, battery-powered devices designed for locating misplaced or lost items. They utilize Bluetooth technology to establish communication with your smartphone, enabling you to track their whereabouts through dedicated mobile applications.
Both AirTags and Tile operate in a similar fashion. You attach the tracker to the item you wish to monitor, and then use the corresponding app to access its location information. When the item is within Bluetooth range, its precise location is displayed on a map. If the item moves beyond Bluetooth range, the app will indicate the tracker’s last known location.
Furthermore, both devices have an incredibly useful feature—they emit an audible sound to assist you in locating your missing item nearby. This proves especially useful for finding items like keys tucked under the couch, wallets perched atop the refrigerator, or any other inventive hiding spots for essential belongings.
How were they judged?
With both AirTags and Tile on the market, it can be tough to decide which is best for finding lost items. To help you determine the right pick, we did an in-depth, hands-on review comparing these Bluetooth trackers side-by-side with focus on several categories.

The Tile Pro is Tile’s most advanced tracker, and the one that was purchased for this review. With a range of 400 feet, it has the longest range of any Tile product. The Tile Pro also has a user-replaceable battery, so you don’t need to buy a whole new device when the battery runs out. It is water-resistant up to making it suitable for outdoor use.
The Tile Pro is fully compatible with both Android and Apple devices, integrating smoothly with the Tile app on each platform. As Tile’s most powerful Bluetooth tracker, it stands above other Tile products like the Tile Mate, Tile Slim, and Tile Sticker in terms of range and durability.
However, the Tile Mate, Slim, and Sticker each have their own advantages. The Tile Mate has a shorter 250-foot range but is still an effective tracker. The thin Tile Slim easily slides into a wallet. And the tiny Tile Sticker can be attached to almost anything. One limitation is that these other Tile models have non-replaceable batteries rated to last around 3 years, but this improves their resistance to water and dust. In my experience, even past expiry, my older than three years Tile Mate and Slim still ring loudly when I use the app’s find feature.
Setup with the Tile app is very easy and offers an intuitive user interface. Your items will be listed with a large green FIND button, that when you push starts ringing the device. They also are listed with easy to identify icons such as a wallet, keys or your phone type of item being tracked. It works well within its expected range and the ringing is loud enough it’s easy to find even if under some blankets or tucked away in a closet.
One feature that Tile trackers have which AirTags lack is the ability to ring your phone when you can’t find it. Both Tile and AirTag allow you to ring the tracker from your phone. But Tile also lets you press a button on the tracker to ring your phone, which can be handy when your phone is the missing item. They also feature a matte black design.
AirTags
One key advantage AirTags have over Tile trackers is Apple’s vast Find My network. The Find My network is comprised of hundreds of millions of Apple devices that can detect nearby AirTags and relay their location to the owner via iCloud. This massive network enables AirTags to leverage the power of crowdsourcing for more accurate and widespread location tracking. In contrast, Tile relies solely on its own users with their app installed for location tracking, resulting in a much smaller potential network.
Additionally, the Find My network uses end-to-end encryption and anonymized data to protect user privacy when locating AirTags. The owner receives the AirTag’s location but those relaying the location remain anonymous. Tile’s location tracking does not offer the same level of privacy protections.
Apple’s AirTags have a clean, minimalist design that is practical. The small, round shape – similar to a quarter but thicker – allows the trackers to be easily slipped into pockets, bags, and keychains. However, the smooth metallic surface is prone to fingerprints and smudges. Another downside is that the AirTags lack any built-in mechanism for attaching them to keys, backpacks or other items you want to track.
The Verdict
After comparing AirTags and Tile across various factors like ease of use, tracking capabilities, design, battery life, compatibility, features, and value, AirTags edged out Tile overall, largely due to the enhanced location tracking provided by Apple’s massive Find My network. However, Tile remains the superior choice if you need maximum durability or primarily lose items around the home.
While both AirTags and Tile models are easy to set up and use through their respective apps, AirTags pull ahead when it comes to tracking lost items in public places or away from home. Leveraging the Apple Find My network of over a million devices, AirTags offer unrivaled ability to quickly locate items left behind in restaurants, theaters, shops, etc. Tile’s network is far more limited in comparison.
Tile excels in tracking items around the house. With 2-4x the Bluetooth range of AirTags, Tiles can locate items in a wider radius. The Tile Pro also has a significantly louder ringtone to help pinpoint its location if buried in couch cushions or grass. For primarily local use cases, Tile is likely the better pick.
Apple’s AirTags leverage the expansive Find My network to deliver best-in-class item tracking when away from home, but their minimalist design lacks built-in attachment methods requiring extra purchases, and they lag in durability compared to Tile trackers, which come equipped with attachment holes/straps so they can be easily secured right out of the box. Tile trackers also boast louder ringtones for finding items around the house and are more waterproof and rugged, making them better suited for real-world use cases such as attaching to keys and outdoor bags that take daily wear and tear; however, Tile’s more limited range when away from home, especially for Android users, gives the advantage to AirTags for long-range tracking. Ultimately, AirTags excel at distant locating while Tile trackers are ready for immediate use and provide reliable tracking in day-to-day home scenarios.
Final Thoughts
For the past three years, I have been using Tile tracking devices to help locate frequently lost items like my phone, keys, and wallet around the home and yard. I prefer Tile over other brands because of their unmatched durability and reliability which are crucial when trying to find items that may have been left outside exposed to the elements. The battery in my Tile Mate has lasted test 3+ years with occasional item finding usage.
The main advantage Tile provides is saving me time and frustration when I’m rushing in the morning or doing yardwork and misplace an essential item.
