Everyone craves certainty and routine, so a significant snowfall is going to wreak havoc on our daily routine and comfort. But there is also the excitement, disruption and change from the humdrums of routine. That rush, often within a short period of time, can bring families together, communities to the grocery store, and connection at work. We finally feel united as one, everyone bracing for this possible far-reaching event. It can almost reach a point of euphoric excitement as you call loved ones and friends you may not have spoken to for a while.
Of course, there is the possibility of that snow chance diminishing, not seeing a single snowflake, and not appearing on the KAIT 8 School Closings. We suddenly and abruptly lose our common bond with each other and are back to our individual behaviors and daily routine. This can be a wake-up call that we have not been reaching to our friends or family as much, and maybe not finding daily sources of joy and excitement. The remedy to prevent this let down is to try to find this intensity and connection with friends, family, or co-workers in daily life, without having to rely on fickle mother nature for motivation.
How can we avoid a letdown when the forecast changes?
- Have a backup plan of fun activities that can be enjoyed indoors or outdoors, regardless of the weather. This could involve board games and movie marathons. Having something to look forward to, even if it’s on the weekend, can help prevent disappointment. Break out those toys that came from Santa and start assembling or put together that one-thousand-piece Lego.

- Connect with loved ones proactively. Don’t wait for a special event to bring you closer to friends and family. Schedule regular catch-up calls or video chats, or simply reach out with a thoughtful message or phone call. Prioritizing regular connection with your loved ones can create a sense of belonging and shared joy that’s independent of external circumstances.
- Get outside and enjoy outdoor activities. There are plenty of reasons to embrace the outdoors in any weather, and waiting for snow shouldn’t be an obstacle. Take a leisurely stroll to enjoy the beauty of nature, regardless of whether there’s snow on the ground.
- Get some outdoor exercise. It may not be as fun as pulling your sled up a snowy hill but do some outdoor exercises. The fresh air and connection with nature can enhance your workout experience.
- Make some warm gooey delights and add a cup of hot cocoa. Get everyone in the kitchen and make up some fun cold weather foods. Some good options might be homemade cinnamon rolls, grilled cheese sandwiches, homemade pizza, and S’mores.
